Q: There are a lot of “chain” assisted living communities being built. What makes Dunwoody Village different?

Dunwoody Village is one of the first area communities to offer a true “continuum of care.” This means that as your needs change—from residential living to assisted living, or from assisted living to skilled nursing—you can remain at Dunwoody and get the care you need, without having to leave your home. Another important difference is that Dunwoody Village has been operating since 1974. We’ve developed best practices for caring for older populations, while newer institutions are just now trying to figure it out. Our residents can attest to our consistent and superior programs, services and care. In fact, many of our residents are “second generation” residents, which to us, is a true testament to our superiority. As a not-for-profit organization, we put the needs of our residents first. Some of the “chains” have to answer to shareholders.

Q: What activities or programs does Dunwoody Village offer?

Dunwoody Village has much to offer, both on- and off-campus. Organized activities include group exercise, educational and wellness seminars, music and dance performances, holiday events, movie screenings and more than 30 committees. For those who prefer more solitary activities, we have a library, fitness center, swimming pool and computer center. Off-site, Dunwoody organizes regular trips to shopping centers, arts and cultural exhibits, theater, and other local attractions.

Q: What types of medical care are available at Dunwoody Village?

Three levels of care are available: residential living, assisted living, and skilled nursing care. We also provide two Alzheimer, memory impaired and dementia units (one in assisted living and one in skilled nursing care). Dunwoody Village employs five primary physicians, a dentist, a podiatrist, a psychologist, a psychiatrist, and more. Our extensive nursing staff provides both out-patient and in-patient care twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. The nursing staff is proud that, year after year, they exceed the “hours per patient” ratio required by state and federal agencies. We also have on-site rehabilitation services.

Q: What medical costs does the monthly fee cover?

Depending upon the unit size that you prefer, the waiting period varies from approximately one to five years. Studio apartments are usually available immediately, while country houses may only become available every three to five years.

Q: What happens if I can no longer afford to pay my monthly fee?

Residents who find themselves unable to pay for their care can apply to receive funds from the Residents’ Reserve Fund, administered by the Board of Trustees. To date, there is more than $8 million dollars in the Fund.

Q: Dunwoody Village is a not-for-profit organization. Is it financially stable?

Dunwoody Village is, and always has been, financially sound. And, because we do not have an owner or shareholders, all revenues are invested back into the community. Dunwoody also holds an A- investment grade rating from Standard and Poor’s.

Q: Is the facility accredited?

Dunwoody Village was one of the first 50 communities in the United States to be accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities and the Continuing Care Accreditation Commission (CARF/CCAC). We participate in the reaccreditation process every year.

Q: What plans do you have for improvements?

Dunwoody Village is a dynamic place. New improvements, based on resident feedback, population trends and our own audits, occur every year. In the past five years, we’ve expanded our assisted-living accommodations, and added the new Alzheimer/dementia care unit. In 2005, we added 12 new apartments, an enlarged gift shop, a grocery store, more common rooms and new offices. Smaller changes also occur—ranging from new outdoor signage to new activities to new menu selections.
